Licence required to ride a 125cc

In Italy, a category B (car) licence allows you to ride scooters up to 125cc within the country. Riders holding an A1 licence or higher have no restrictions. International visitors must check that their licence is valid in Italy for the 125cc category: non-EU citizens are advised to carry an International Driving Permit together with their original licence, as required by the Italian Highway Code.

The price also depends on the season: from June to September the full rate applies (high season), in April, May and October there is a 15% discount (mid season), and from November to March the discount rises to 30% (low season). Scoast is one of the few rental companies on the coast to offer half-day increments, so you only pay for the time you actually use.

Where to pick up or receive the scooter

Pickup takes place at the Scoast base at Corso Reginna 168 in Maiori (SA), in the geographic heart of the Amalfi Coast: 5 km from Amalfi, 8 km from Ravello and 20 km from Positano. Thanks to online check-in completed in advance, pickup takes about 5 minutes.

Where to park in Maiori

Maiori is the most convenient town on the coast for anyone travelling by scooter: the seafront — the longest on the Amalfi Coast — has motorcycle bays all along Corso Reginna and in the parallel streets. In the summer months the bays near the beach fill up by mid-morning: arrive by 9:30 and you'll find a space without trouble. Follow the road markings: motorcycle bays are marked with lines and reserved for two-wheelers.

Where to park in Amalfi

In Amalfi the scooter bays are mainly in the harbour area and along the main road into town. This is the scooter's huge advantage: while cars pay some of the most expensive parking in Italy or queue for a space, on a scooter you park in a few minutes a stone's throw from Piazza Duomo. In high season it still pays to arrive early in the morning, as Amalfi is the most visited town on the coast.

Where to park in Positano

In Positano the motorcycle bays are along the main roads (Via Marconi and Viale Pasitea) that descend towards the centre. The town is largely pedestrian and vertical: park your scooter up high and walk down to the beach — it is still far more convenient than hunting for a car park, which in Positano is among the most expensive on the coast. The golden rule applies here too: arrive before 10:00 in summer.

Where to park in Ravello

Ravello, at 350 metres above sea level, is reached from Atrani via a spectacular hairpin road. The scooter bays are near the tunnel at the entrance to the centre and around Piazza Duomo. Compared with Amalfi and Positano, finding a space in Ravello is generally easier, even on Ravello Festival days: all the more reason to ride up at sunset, once the coaches have already left.

Traffic, ZTL and rules to know

The historic centres of Amalfi, Positano and the other villages are largely pedestrian or governed by limited-traffic zones: always follow the signs at the entrance to each town, which indicate where vehicles are not allowed. In the summer months the coastal municipalities and ANAS issue specific orders to manage traffic on the SS163 (such as alternate-plate restrictions for cars at peak times): two-wheelers generally enjoy greater freedom of movement, but always check the current orders on the official municipal channels before setting off.

In July and August it pays to leave before 9:00 to avoid the tour-bus traffic. The best time to ride is April-June and September-October: manageable traffic, mild weather and perfect light for photos.

Safety tips

The SS163 is a winding road but well surfaced: with basic scooter experience it is within anyone's reach. These pointers make riding safer and more enjoyable:

• Always wear your helmet fastened (it is required by law and included in the rental)
• Sound your horn before the tightest blind corners, as the locals do
• Keep to the right: line buses and tour coaches take up much of the road on the hairpins
• Avoid riding at night if you don't know the road
• Stop only in the lay-bys: don't pull over on a bend to take photos
• In the rain, slow down: the surface on the hairpins can be slippery
